Fatigue Life Analysis

The method of fatigue analysis employed by DJHEC takes finite element analysis to the next level by accurately predicting a structure or components cycles to failure. Instead of simply looking at the stress, strain, and displacement results of FEA individual load cases, a number of load case events can be combined in to a duty cycle to determine the summation of damage in order to predict B10 or B50 life of a component or structure. This process reduces analysis time and significantly shortens the number of iterations required to meet requirements. The typical fatigue life process DJHEC utilizes is as follows:

  1. FEA solver such as ABAQUS or ANSYS is first used to perform analysis of the component or structure
    • All load cases of the component or structures expected duty cycle are individually ran
  2. The results from ABAQUS are used in a strain-life fatigue analysis in nCode®
    • The load cases are summed over the expected life to predict the fatigue life
    • Welds, edges, and surfaces are evaluated based on their unique stress concentration factors
  3. nCode® produces a contour plot or table of the expected life cycles to failure
    • Accurate settings such as load mapping, material properties, and plastic correction factors are essential for accurate results
